A group of men has stormed the Syrian embassy in Canberra, smashing up the ground floor, as protesters attacked five other Syrian embassies in Europe and the Middle East.

Australian Federal Police say extensive damage was caused to the embassy in O’Malley after the men forced their way in about 9.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

Three staff members were there at the time but weren’t hurt.

A crime scene has been set up.

It comes as five embassies in Europe and the Middle East were attacked after Syrian forces reportedly killed more than 200 people in the city of Homs.

Six people were arrested in London after demonstrators stormed the embassy there.

A similar scene played out in Athens, where police said 13 people were detained after forcing their way into the Syrian Embassy before dawn.

In Germany, 20 people forced their way into Syria’s Embassy in Berlin on Friday and damaged offices, police said.

Syrian protesters in Cairo set part of the embassy on fire on Friday night, while protesters in Kuwait broke windows at the embassy and hoisted the opposition flag.
