Facebook. Everytime I see that word it gets on my nerves. Why? Because children are obsessed with it. I’m currently going through a big battle with my 14 year old daughter over it.
Facebook is supposed to be a network for adults to connect with old friends but we all know that each child at school must have Facebook otherwise they are not in the “IN” crowd and in sync with what’s going on with everyone. For this reason I refuse to give them Twitter.
Every parent I have spoken to has the same problem with Facebook. “Oh Emily sits on Facebook all evening too!”. Now try taking Facebook off them for a couple of hours as disciplinary action and these children act like you have chopped their right arm off!
There are so many things that frustrate me about Facebook. First of all the amount of photos they are obsessed with taking. My daughters aged 14 and 11 will not pout in photos but I have witnessed to my horror other girls at their age and even younger who are their friends pouting like models. The other frustrating thing is that some of these young girls take photos of themselves with bikinis. My daughter once took one lying down on the grass and I told her to take it off, to me it looked too provocative but to her it looked “cool”. A friend of mine, her friend took one with her daughter and they were both pouting like models, honestly you’d want to slap some sense into both mother and daughter after that one! Another annoying aspect of it is how many friends they can accumulate, the average amount to be “Cool” is about 800 friends, some have 2000. Really? I mean how do you remember that many people?? These kids know nothing about quality over quantity.
Now another aspect of Facebook that I find daunting is the bullying that occurs with it. Some kids will bully others on it and how often have we heard on the news about kids committing suicide because they were bullied on Facebook! That just shouldn’t happen. Lately I have been hearing of a few teenage suicides happen locally and it is really horrifying that these kids get pushed to the extreme all because of this stupid social network where the pressure to be popular is at an all time high. No matter how many times teachers and parents try to address this problem, kids just won’t listen, apparently we are just too old fashioned.
I recently tried to take up Karate last year with my 14 year old daughter. I thought it would be a good way for her to get her to release some energy other than sitting on the computer/phone, facebooking all night. Well half way through the lesson while the instructor was still running the class she walks out to go to the the bathroom just to go and play with her phone. I eventually got frustrated with the whole aspect of taking up Karate just to help her out and asked her if she was still interested in Karate, she said No and then we both quit, in a way I was glad because my knees were killing me doing it but in another way I would have kept on doing it for her as encouragement to get her off the computer/phone.
Honestly, it’s times like these where you wish you could bring back the 80′s!!!!!

Genetically modified seeds are banned in Hungary. So when government regulators found that 1,000 acres of maize had been planted with genetically modified seeds, they just plowed the suckers under. You stick it to the Monsanto, Hungary!
Leaving aside the fact that this sort of sweep-the-checkers-off-the-board move is always kind of badass, this is also some amazingly thorough government regulation. For starters, they were willing to take collateral damage — only some of the seeds on those 1,000 acres were Monsanto-born Frankenmaize, but they destroyed it all despite the fact that it was too late to plant more. Also, these checks were performed despite the fact that you aren’t allowed to import GM seeds in the first place. Federal regulators DOUBLE-checking? What are these people, Communists?
The free movement of goods within the EU means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary, but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said. Regional public radio reported that the two biggest international seed producing companies are affected in the matter and GMO seeds could have been sown on up to the thousands of hectares in the country. Most of the local farmers have complained since they just discovered they were using GMO seeds.
This actually happened back in July, but it’s making the rounds of the internet now, because everyone likes to imagine a band of angry Cossacks just fucking a field of GM corn up old-school.

$6trn Of Fake US Bonds Found In Bank Vault

Anti-mafia investigators have found fake US treasury bonds with a face value of $6trn (£3.8trn) hidden in a Swiss bank vault.
The bonds were discovered inside false compartments in three reinforced metal crates in Zurich.
The face value amount equates to more than a third of US national debt.
Some bond certificates were valued at $1bn eachEight arrests have been made in Italy, in an investigation led by Italian authorities and aided by theUS Secret Service and technical experts.
“These fictitious bonds were apparently part of a plan to defraud some Swiss banks,” the US embassy in Rome said in a statement.
Operation Vulcania, which actually took place in November last year, has only now been revealed.
Italian investigators said members of a criminal network had tried to use the bonds in emerging markets around the world or to give them to banks as collateral for loans.
The bonds were dated 1934 and one of the deposit boxes also contained a forgery of the Treaty of Versailles, which investigators said could have been used to justify the sums involved as payments between states following World War I.
A fake 1919 Treaty of Versailles was also in the haulThe operation was “the biggest for this type of investigation,” Giovanni Colangelo, the head of the prosecutor’s office in the southern city of Potenza, said.
The trail to the bank vault started with an an investigation into southern Italian mafia clans, Mr Colangelo said.
The investigation allowed detectives to uncover “an international network with people implicated in numerous countries,” he said without giving more details and adding that he believed more fake bonds were still hidden.
US Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said: “Our Rome office assisted the Italian authorities with expertise and confirmation that the subject obligations were fictitious.”
A US law enforcement source said: “Part of the scam is that you say: ‘We came up with this from long lost supply of US government notes that were hidden in a warehouse.’
“Essentially, if it is too good to be true, it probably is.”

Friday’s was not the first seizure of fake US bonds by Italian authorities but it is the one with by far the highest face value.
In September 2009, Italian police seized $116bn (£73bn) in phoney bonds and arrested two Filipino nationals carrying them at Milan’s airport.
And just months earlier, police arrested two Japanese nationals on the Italian-Swiss border carrying bonds with a face value of $134bn (£84bn).
